The year comes to a close

Where to start, this year is definitely up there with the best of my life. Its had its highs and a few lows too.

I visited 20 countries and many more cities including: Amsterdam, Auckland, Bangkok, New York, Wellington, Berlin, Florence, Munich, Toronto, San Fransisco and many more.

I met up with old friends and strangers who became friends, I met new members of family and caught up with old.

I spent 2 months living in my van around Europe, 2 months living in a car I bought and sold in New Zealand, many nights in an array of amazing hostels. Slept on sofas and in the houses of friends and acquaintances.

I travelled somewhere between 30 and 40,000 miles - by plane, car, boat, bus, pushbike and motorbike. I took way too many photos, over 20,000 and am still editing them.

I learnt to say hello and thank you in at least 10 different languages. I found smiling to be a universal language. I slept in a jungle, I help a family build a home, swam with dolphins, worked as a milkman, I did school runs with kids, snorkelled with stingray and many other random activities.

I’ve learnt more in the last year than I think I have in the last 5 if not 10. I’m trying to avoid cliche here but I’ve realised how alike people are around the world with similar hopes and dreams. It really upsets me how much the media distorts peoples views on this, but thats another conversation. The world is a much smaller place that you think it is and its changing fast.

I hope I can hold on to what I have learnt, to do things without fear. I realise I’ve only scratched the surface too, there is a whole world out there I may never see but at least I’ve started. Thanks to everyone who took the time to look at the blog or post comments etc, just began as a little thing to keep close friends and family in the loop so the fact it’s inspired others and so many people have said to me how much they enjoyed it is a real bonus.

The final month - Pints, Pottering, Photos, Prints and Publishing

So here I am in the last month of my year off. It’s been such a great year but even though I got home early November I’ve been keeping busy. I’ve been having a bit of a clear out of unwanted things at home, travel is great for giving you a bit of perspective on what you need in your life. Started playing music again - hopefully auditioning for a band in January on the bass.

I’ve been slowly editing the 20k photos I took this year, lots of average, the odd cracker. Also been working on a book inspired by this year off and the people I met - it’s got a long way to go but its going at least.

I’ve also been working in a new job until I return to the University in January - having no income and wanting to do a road trip snowboarding in January isn’t a winning combination so when my friend Rob offered me some work at his dairy doing a milk round outside of Plymouth I thought why not - fun to try something completely different. Getting used to 2 am starts took some adjustment though there is something fun about driving around in the early hours listening to loud music whilst the rest of the world sleeps - seen some lovely sunrises and starry nights.

Another example of a good lesson I’ve learnt this year - keep doing something new, however small, it keeps life interesting.

Barren Coast 🗾🗾🗾 This epic scene was found on the exposed west coast of New Zealand’s South Island. The remains of a fallen tree had come to rest in the sand. I camped nearby the night before, arriving in darkness - a 20 minute drive down a gravel track. I had no idea what the place was like but decided to check out the beach before dawn and found this place. Prints available here: http://ift.tt/1l3cA0n

One last stop then home. On Saturday I headed from Amsterdam to Wemeldinge in the south west of the Netherlands to visit a good old friend Chris. He works for a company doing tours of Europe. We had a nice chilled day watching the rugby world cup (New Zealand vs South Africa) and Chris cooked an amazing pulled pork tea. Really nice to catch up with him, been too long. Sunday I set off for home. A long old journey of just over 400 miles and a two hour ferry from Dunkirk to Dover. I do a solid 6 hour drive from Dover to Plymouth arriving home fairly late.

Amsterdam, Netherlands. Apologies for the lack of photos but I’ve not really been feeling creative the last few days - ridiculous in a city as awesome as Amsterdam but hey, I don’t fight it when I can’t be bothered to get the camera out anymore. I’ve had a great few days here. Everyone knows the stuff Amsterdam is famed for (drugs, red light, etc) so I won’t hark on about that. I’ve mainly been checking out a few galleries and exploring the city. The Van Gogh gallery was really inspiring for me. Also saw some fantastic work in the Reijksmuseum. I’ve spent many hours exploring on bike which I loved. Also I got a chance to catch up with the guy in the photo. Bauke and I originally met in New Zealand in the beginning of May in Lake Tekapo. A really special and memorable part of my trip. He was hitch hiking and we ended up hanging out for a few days. I had dinner with him and his brother tonight and had a nice catchup. Living in a cube, Rotterdam. I was really intrigued by these cool houses for a few simple reasons. They were built around the time I was born, they look cool from the outside and finally how could you not want to see inside one. Here’s some more info from the mighty Wikipedia. Cube houses (Dutch: Kubuswoningen) are a set of innovative houses built in Rotterdam and Helmond in the Netherlands, designed by architect Piet Blom and based on the concept of “living as an urban roof”: high density housing with sufficient space on the ground level. Blom tilted the cube of a conventional house 45 degrees, and rested it upon a hexagon-shaped pylon. His design represents a village within a city, where each house represents a tree, and all the houses together, a forest.[1]
