Nadal fined for receiving illegal coaching
Rafael Nadal has confirmed he has been fined for receiving illegal coaching tips during his Wimbledon victory over Philipp Petzschner.
Nadal faces Robin Soderling in the quarter-finals on Wednesday, in a repeat of the 2010 French Open final. The world No. 1 will walk onto court with something of a cloud hanging over his head though, after he was found guilty of taking on-court tips from his uncle Toni.
During Nadal's 6-4 4-6 6-7 (5/7) 6-2 6-3 victory over Petzschner in the third round, the Spaniard was warned by umpire Cedric Mourier about his conduct in the fifth set. Nadal later denied the incident and said he would take it up with Championships referee Andrew Jarrett.
"Sometimes in the past Toni would talk - maybe too much - and the referee or the umpire would give me advice and, if it continued, a warning, but he didn't talk too much today in my opinion," Nadal argued.
"I told him (the umpire) we're going to talk to the supervisor and we will be doing. Toni wasn't giving me any tip, he was only supporting me."
The outcome has seen Nadal fined £1,300, and he confirmed the news ahead of his renewing of acquaintances with Soderling.
"Yes, I've been fined. The rules are the rules," Nadal was quoted as saying in the Sun.
