11 July 1877

There are still about three weeks before we'll see each other. I live exclusively by the hope of the vacation allowed to me by my wife from 1st August until September. Yesterday we went to Pavlovsk. Papa is enchanted with my wife, as was to be expected. Lizaveta Mikhaylovna was very kind and attentive, but several times I noticed tears in her eyes. This perspicacious and kind stepmother probably guesses that I am going through a critical moment in my life. I confess that all this was very hard for me, i.e., Papa's tenderness and endearments (so opposite to my own coldness to my wife) and Lizaveta Mikhaylovna's perspicacity. I am indeed going through a difficult moment in my life, however I feel that little by little I am growing accustomed to my new situation. This would be utterly false and unbearable if I had deceived my wife in anything, but I have warned her that she can rely only on my brotherly love. The attack was not resumed. Since the first attempt, my wife has became totally repugnant to me in the physical sense. I am sure that sometime later the attacks will resume and prove more successful. But for now any attempts would be useless.

Laroche is giving me enormous consolation and support. He is very kind. Yesterday we didn't see each other: he went to Peterhof, to attend Rubinstein's concert, and we went to Pavlovsk, but today we will meet. Yesterday morning, while my wife was taking a bath, I went to mass at St Isaac's Cathedral. I felt the need to pray. When I returned, I learned with surprise that Rubinstein (Nikolay) had visited us; he came for his brother's concert. He sat for half an hour, but did not wait for me. My wife was enchanted by his courtesy.

I want to stay here until Wednesday morning, and then to leave by the express train. If like it on the belle-mère's [1] estate, I'll stay there for a few days, and then somehow kill time until 1st August (and I'll try to steal another couple of days), upon which I shall fly away [2]. I have in mind to spend several days at Kamenka, and then, taking you with me, will actually leave for the Caucasus. It's somehow awkward to live in Kamenka for an entire month. I kiss you tenderly.

Yours P. Tchaikovsky
