Katie Hopkins and the 2am apology you might've missed

At 2am, Katie Hopkins put out this tweet.

The link takes you to an apology made by Katie and the Daily Mail for a story published last December.

In her column, it was "suggested that Mohammed Tariq Mahmood and his brother, Mohammed Zahid Mahmood, are extremists with links to Al Qaeda".

In their apology, the Daily Mail said: "We are happy to make clear that Tariq Mahmood and Zahid Mahmood are not extremists, nor do they have links to Al Qaeda."

While most people in the UK are likely to have been asleep at 2 o'clock this morning, the post didn't go unnoticed.

In fact, Katie's name has been trending all morning.

"We and Katie Hopkins apologise to the Mahmood family for the distress and embarrassment caused and have agreed to pay them substantial damages and their legal costs," the Daily Mail said in their statement.

It's not clear how much the damages and costs amount to.

The Mahmoods have yet to make a public statement.

Along with sharing the apology, social media users have also been recirculating a link to Stop Funding Hate, a campaign asking retailers such as Marks and Spencer and John Lewis to stop advertising in certain newspapers.

That organisation has asked supporters not to respond with abuse.

Since her early morning post, Katie has been sharing her thoughts on other topics, including striking workers and the media's left-wing bias.

She's booked as a lunchtime guest on BBC Radio 2, alongside former MP George Galloway.

While many of the tweets are critical of Katie Hopkins, she also has plenty of supporters.
