Chicago Blackhawks forward Michal Handzus needed surgeries to repair injuries to his wrist and knee, but said Friday he expects to be ready for training camp.
"I had two surgeries, but I'm healing and it's coming along," Handzus told ESPNChicago.com.."Right now, wrist, I still can't do anything. It's in a cast for one more week. After four weeks, I'm going to start to do something. It's a little bit slower. My knee, it's pretty much I'm rehabbing right now."
Handzus was acquired by the Blackhawks from the San Jose Sharks prior to the NHL Trade Deadline. He had three goals and eight assists in 23 Stanley Cup Playoff games. The report says he played with a broken wrist and torn MCL during the Final, which the Blackhawks won against the Boston Bruins.
Handzus, 36, signed a one-year contract to remain with Chicago on July 5.
"We won the Cup together," Handzus told the website. "I've only [been here] three months; I got traded in April, but when you go through the playoffs and win it with a group of guys, you know, you get really close to each [other] and you don't want to leave.
"Obviously, it's a strong team for next season. We're going to have another chance to win it again. You want to put yourself in the best position you can, so it's a pretty easy decision to stay here."
